Hibiya Ping Pong Platz

Commissioned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the installation is a temporary meeting place-playground realized at Hibiya Park, in the very hearth of Tokyo, next to the Imperial Palace.

Composed of four tables made of steel, four wooden benches and two construction site lamps, Hibiya Ping Pong Platz is a free space addressed to all, where people can gather, play, socialize, make new encounters and share their free time outdoor together.

My deepest gratitude goes to my friend Junya Yamamine - curator of the Hibiya Art Park exhibition - prematurely deceased at the age of 41. Junya, like me, has always believed in the importance of projects directed toward conviviality and sociability and saw in Ping Pong Platz, a unique opportunity to challenge the idea of public space in Japan.
