Fluire

Setouchi Triennale - Shodoshima Island, Japan

 

2500 plants, 400 somen boxes, hose, bamboo canes, hand-made benches 

Inspired by the communities of Hitoyama and Nakayama on Shodoshima Island, the project involved local people to transform the former swimming pool, once used by students of Hitoyama Elementary School, into a community garden.
Acting as a catalyst and choosing to work on something strongly related to the very heart of the Hitoyama and Nakayama areas such as the element of water, the artist has reactivated the space, abandoned for 15 years, giving it a new shape through the celebration of the main local activity - the production of somen, a typical Japanese spaghetti - and the reinterpretation of its elements and materials.

The term "Fluire" refers to the flow of liquids in the environments that host them, but at the same time it refers to the incessant change of things, to their continuous mutation. The space will continue to change shape with the passage of time and with the help and passion of the local people who will take care of the garden.
